Therapy and Family Support Programs for Drug Rehabilitation

There are several treatment options available to patients who are seeking rehabilitation services for addiction recovery. The focus of this article is to provide a brief overview of the common rehabilitation services that are available in the United States. The services can be categorized into two sections: residential and outpatient treatment.

Within the residential category, there are long term and short term programs. Long term programs provide 24 hour care and can generally last 6 to 12 months. Patients typically stay in a location with professional staff and other residents. Aside from around-the-clock staff support, the benefits of long term residential care include productive activities and a structured social environment.

Short term residential programs typically last around 3 to 6 weeks in a hospital-based treatment facility. After the patient has completed the 3 to 6 week recovery phase, he or she transitions to an outpatient program. Short term residential programs are typically less expensive than the long term programs.

The choice of outpatient programs usually depends on the severity of the intervention. Programs can range from interventions that are as intensive as residential programs, to being as minimal as drug education. It is common for many outpatient programs to involve group counseling as a form of reinforcement, accountability, and to give patients a sense of community.

A common approach to outpatient programs is the integration of rehab family drug therapy, which involves the patient’s family in the recovery process. This approach recognizes and utilizes the family’s strengths and weaknesses as potential tools during recovery. In many cases, family support provides a social circle that reinforces the patient’s rehabilitation process. In other cases, this approach helps uncover family issues that may have contributed to the patient’s condition. Despite the approach, many therapists recognize the benefits of family support programs in rehab.
